The Burlington Healthy Community Coalition currently supports two nationally successful parenting programs for Burlington parents. We encourage you to take time to find out about these powerful programs!
Burlington SAFE HOMES Parent Network is a national substance abuse prevention program that helps parents communicate with other parents regarding their child’s safety and family guidelines. The SAFE HOMES Parent Network program is designed to encourage parents to:
- develop and communicate a clear position to youth about not using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs;
- not allow gatherings in their homes when parents/guardians are not present to supervise;
- use appropriate and consistent discipline in dealing with adolescent substance use;
- not allow the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs in their homes or on their property; and
- communicate with other parents in their children’s social circles.

The Strengthening Families Program is a parent, youth, and family skills-building curriculum designed to:
- prevent teen substance abuse and other behavior problems
- strengthen parenting skills
- build family strengths
Studies show that the program is proven effective in:
- delaying the onset of adolescent substance use
- lowering levels of aggression
- increasing the resistance to peer pressure in youth
- increasing the ability of parents/caregivers to set appropriate limits and show affection to and support of their children
The program is delivered for parents, youth, and families using realistic videos, role-playing, discussions, learning games, and family projects.
